Crucifixion Thorn Area

MAP     Satellite

Between the Alvord and Cronese Mountains there is a series of disconnected low hills covered primarily with a creosote bush scrub, sparse in many places.  In this area is found a particularly dense concentration of the crucifixion thorn, Castela emoryi.  This plant, though ranging into southern Arizona, has a spotty distribution and is nowhere common.  (See Crucifixion Thorn Natural Area #1 and Crucifixion Thorn Natural Area #2)

At this site the plant is growing on Quaternary alluvium.

Animal life is typical of the region.

Integrity:  Though there are roads in the area and mining has taken place, the plants are in good condition.

Use:  Private
