Dale Dry Lake

Map     Satellite

This broad, sandy, alluvial fan lying between the Sheep Hole and Pinto Mountains, and laced with low sand dunes, supports an example of the typical creosote bush scrub community.  Creosote bush, Larrea tridentata, is the dominant, but there is a substantial amount of galleta grass, Pleuraphis rigida.

Many species of reptiles are found in the area, including Mojave fringe-toed lizard, Lima scoparia, desert horned lizard, Phrynosoma platyrhinos, desert iguana, Dipsosaurus dorsalis, and Western shovel-nosed snake, Chionactis occipitalis.  Coyotes, Canis latrans, and numerous rodents are also present.

Integrity:  The area is traversed by a highway and there are some jeep trails in the area; otherwise it is relatively undisturbed.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, on public portion; some private.
