Devils Backbone - North

MAP     Satellite

Along this high, narrow ridge between Dawson Peak and Pine Mountain is a botanically interesting area. A lodgepole pine forest constitutes the main plant community.  In addition to the Pinus contorta var. murrayana there is Jeffrey pine, Pinus jeffreyi, mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus ledifolius, Holodiscus microphyllus, and the relatively uncommon Ribes montigenum.

A disjunct population of the Western juniper, Juniperus occidentalis ssp. australis occurs here.  This population, and several others in the vicinity, are some 176 kilometers (110 miles) south of the main range in the Sierra and 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of other disjunct populations in the San Jacinto Mountains.

This area is the only locality in Southern California for the arctic-alpine species Crepis nana.

Integrity:  Aside from a hiking trail, there is no development in the area.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, light recreation.
