Fourth Of July Canyon

Map     Satellite

Located in the New York Mountains, this canyon contains south and east slopes covered with pinyon woodland, Pinus monophylla, and scrub oak, Quercus turbinella.  Within the area are two rare plants, the recently described Eriogonum ericifolium var. thornei and Astragalus cimae var. cimae.  The former is known only from a very small site within the area.

The fauna is typical of the high Mojave. The Panamint chipmunk, Eutamias panamintinus, though common here, is near the southern limits of its range.

In the canyon there is a spring.

Integrity:  Wining has occurred and there are dirt roads in the area.

Use:  Educational, research, light recreational.
