Helendale - Prospect Peak Area

MAP     Satellite

Prospect Peak is one of several low hills rising some 150 meters (500 feet) above the surrounding valley a few kilometers southeast of Helendale. These hills are predominantly Mesozoic metavolcanics, mostly covered with Pleistocene alluvium.

Vegetation is creosote bush scrub.  On the alluvium there is a relatively large population of the threatened cactus Sclerocactus polyancistrus.

Among the animals present in the area is the desert tortoise, Gopherus agassizi.

Integrity: The area is relatively undisturbed though there is an old road through it.

Use:  Research, educational, observational.  Some private.
