Mojave River Camp

MAP     Satellite

This area, which includes the portion of the Mojave River by the Camp and the lower portion of Deep Creek, exhibits an excellent riparian habitat in the lower portions of the creek.  The surrounding area is chaparral.  The rare Hemizonia mohavensis is known from only this area.

The area formerly supported an endemic population of Mojave chub, Gila mohavensis; however, hybridizing with the closely related Gila orcutti eliminated the former from the area.

The area is the confluence of two dissimilar waters and supports important aquatic insect populations.

Integrity:  A dam has spoiled much of its scientific value as an area exhibiting a faunal mix of desert and mountain forms.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, present.
