Moovalya Marsh

MAP     Satellite

Headgate Rock Dam on the Colorado River forms Lake Moolvaya, which on the California side is primarily a freshwater marsh with Typha sp., Scirpus sp., and associated species.

The marsh is frequented by numerous waterfowl and shorebirds and is the home of the endangered Yuma clapper rail, Rallus longirostris yumanensis. Formerly the area supported a heron rookery.

Integrity:  Dammed, the river widens here considerably.  The marsh is owned by the Chemehuevi Indians and there has been consideration given to its development.  On the Arizona side there is considerable development and the lake itself is used by numerous pleasure craft.

Use:  Private
