Mule Canyon
Map SatelliteVegetation in this area, near the southern end of the Calico Mountains, is creosote bush scrub with Larrea tridentata dominant. Of note is the excellent stand of desert holly, Atriplex hymenelytra, in the canyon.
Animals are relatively abundant and representative of the Mojave Desert.
Geologically, the area presents a complex assortment of primarily Tertiary rocks, igneous and sedimentary. Much of the igneous rock flows, dating from the Miocene and earlier, underwent extensive alteration due to the intrusives. Fossils have been collected in the area.
Integrity: Aside from several jeep trails, the area is virtually undisturbed.
Use: Research, educational, observational.
