Nopah Nannofossil Site

MAP     Satellite

Found here are the oldest known eucaryotic (mitosing) cells.  These cells, along with procaryotic nannofossils, occur in the chert in the Upper Beck Spring Dolomite (Pahrump Group).

Several types of nannofossils have been described, ranging in size from 5 to 8 microns, from this area and one has definitely been assigned to the Chlorophyta and others show affinities with the Chrysophytes.

Cyanophytes (procaryotic) are also present.  Indirect radiometric dating gives an age of from 1.2 to 1.4 billion years for the chert.

Integrity:  Virtually pristine.

Use:  Research
