Quaking Aspen Stand Quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides, is the
widest-ranging tree on the continent, ranging from Alaska to Labrador and south
to northern Mexico. In California it
is found from the Sierra north except for this exceptionally disjunct population
in the San Bernardino Mountains, 240 kilometers (150 miles) south of the Sierra
stands. This colony grows around the 2,300 meter (7,500 ft.)
level on the eastern slopes of Mount San Gorgonio along Fish Creek. Integrity: Much
of the stand is within the San Gorgonio Wilderness Area. Use: Research,
education, light recreation. Ref: Grinnell,
Joseph, 1908. The Biota of the San
Bernardino Mountains. University of
California Publ. Zool. Vol. 5, p. 1-170. April 1975
