Sacramento Mountains

MAP     Satellite

Most of this range of mountains is sparsely covered by creosote bush scrub on a rocky substrate; however, in portions (see Bigelow Cholla Natural Area) there are excellent stands of bigelow cholla, Opuntia bigelovii.  This cactus, which is more typical of the Sonoran Desert though it is not uncommon in the southern Mojave, is found here in association with other more typical Sonoran forms.

Animal life is typical of the drier and lower desert ranges.

Geologically, the range is complex, with Pre-Cambrian granitics, gneisses, and igneous rocks forming the main body.  There are some Tertiary intrusives and volcanics as well as some probable mid-Miocene sedimentaries.  These latter are rich in fossils.

Integrity:  The area is virtually undisturbed.

Use;  Research, educational, observational.  Some private.
