Border Field

Map     Satellite

This area includes small acreages of coastal sage scrub, coastal strand and coastal salt marsh. However, the prime interest is in the low coastal bluff adjacent to the Mexican border where at least six rare plants are found.  They are Agave shawii (type locality), Bergerocactus emoryi, Cordylanthus maritimus ssp. maritimus, Dudleya attenuata, Ferocactus viridescens, and Opuntia parryi var. serpentina.  Additionally, a number of disjunct desert plants are found here.

A variety of habitats in this small area has resulted in the sighting of a relatively high number of bird species, including several unusual records.

Integrity:  The area has been disturbed to a slight extent.  It is now an undeveloped State Park, with dirt roads leading to the beach area.

Use:  Research, educational, light recreation.
