Camp Pendleton Grasslands In the Vallecitos region to the west of Margarita Peak,
near the northeastern boundary of Camp Pendleton, there is an extensive stand of
relict prairie grasslands. It is one
of the best remaining grasslands in the State.
Though there are a number of stands in the Camp, this is the most
extensive. The dominant grass is purple needlegrass, Nassella pulchra, though
Stipa lepida is present. The rare Horkelia truncata is found in the vicinity. Integrity: The area is periodically burned, frequently
annually, thus giving the native grasses an advantage over exotics. Some spring grazing
and troop training have taken place in the area in the past. Use: Restricted Ref: Barry,
W. James, 1972. The Central Valley
Prairie Vol. I, California Prairie Ecosystem. California Department of Parks and
Recreation. July 1975
