Ewing Oak Preserve

MAP     Satellite

Located in the Agua Tibia Mountains, about 3 kilometers (2 miles) south of Lake Henshaw, this preserve supports an oak woodland.  The dominant species in the woodland is Engelmann oak, Quercus engelmannii, though California black oak, Quercus kelloggii, and interior live oak, Quercus wislizenii, are present.  The cover ranges from closed canopy to open savannah. The understory is primarily grassland; however, there is also some chaparral with scrub oak, Quercus sp.

Along the course of the intermittent Bloomdale Creek a riparian association occurs. Cottonwood, Populus fremontii, and sycamore, Platanus racemosa, form the overstory here.

Animals are typical of the region.

Integrity: The preserve has been grazed in the past but is now managed for habitat recovery.

Use:  Research, educational.
