Hot Springs Mountain
Map SatelliteThis is a relatively rugged area with steep, chaparral-covered slopes. Chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Arctostaphylos spp., and Ceanothus spp. are among the conspicuous elements of the chaparral. Grading into the chaparral is a southern oak woodland with Engelmann oak, Quercus engelmannii, and coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia.
On the ridge tops at the higher elevations and on protected slopes and valleys there is a yellow pine forest with ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, white fir, Abies concolor, and big-cone Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga macrocarpa.
Animal life is varied and abundant.
There are numerous springs and several intermittent creeks in the area. Mesozoic granitics, which outcrop locally, underlie the area.
Integrity: Much of the area is essentially virgin due to the lack of roads and trails and the density of the vegetation.
