Kearny Mesa Lateritic Soils

MAP     Satellite

Within the Miramar Mound National Landmark and the adjacent area there is an abundance of highly weathered, lateritic soils.  The mesa is one of a series of very old terraces which occur along the California coast and which have varying types of extreme soils resulting in peculiar and stunted vegetation, rich in endemics.

On the Mesa, which has been much dissected by differential erosion, in the better-preserved, broad, flat areas highly acid soils occur under semi-arid climatic conditions where the mean annual rainfall is about 25 centimeters (10 inches).

Integrity:  The area is occupied by the Miramar Naval Air Station and there are various facilities within the designated area.

Use:  Restricted.
