Point Loma Area

Map     Satellite

Though much of Point Loma is utilized for various military installations, there remains a fairly extensive coastal sage scrub, particularly on the bluffs and bluff tops.  Of note are the rare or unusual plants that have been collected or occur here.  They include Agave shawii, Chorizanthe orcuttiana, Dichondra occidentalis, Erysimum ammophilum, Ferocactus viridescens, and Pholisma arenarium.

Animal life is relatively abundant and typical. The rare peregrine falcon, Falco peregrinus, and osprey, Pandion haliaetus, forage in the area. Gray whales, Eschrichtius glaucus, are seen off the Point in great numbers during the migratory season.

Upper Cretaceous and Pleistocene marine sedimentaries form the peninsula.

Integrity: Much of the area is developed; however, the remaining natural vegetation is relatively undisturbed. The Cabrillo National Monument is near the tip of the peninsula.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, present. Portions restricted.
