Scripps Shoreline - Underwater Reserve; San Diego Marine Life Reserve

MAP     Satellite

These coincident reserves, which extend from the mean high-tide line seaward 305 meters (1,000 feet), contain a variety of habitats including the innermost portions of the Scripps Submarine Canyon (see La Jolla Bay).  While most of the shoreline is sandy beach, there are areas of rocky reefs and gravel, cobble and shale substrate.  Onshore, adjacent to the reserves, are cliffs and bluffs with some rocky headlands.

In addition to the surf grass, Phyllospadix scouleri, a number of algae are found here including Egregia laevigata, Pelagophycus porra, Laminaria farlowii, Macrocystis pyrifera – in abundance – and Rhodymenia spp., among others.

There is a wide variety of intertidal animals here.

Integrity:  For a number of years the area has been used extensively by the University of California for educational purposes and is managed as a part of the University's Natural Land and Water Reserves System. Though generally well controlled, there has been some impact from over-collecting, general trespass and littering due to the ease of access.

Use:  Research, educational.
