Silver Strand Beach

MAP     Satellite

Only remnants of the dunes and vegetation that once flourished here remain.  Of particular significance are the desert species found here in the coastal strand vegetation.  Some of the common species include the prickly pears Opuntia x occidentalis and Opuntia prolifera, and Mexican tea, Ephedra californica. Three rare plants are known from the strand, Erysimum ammophilum, Lotus nuttallianus, and Pholisma arenarium.

The strand is built up of materials brought to the coast by the rivers and streams and then shifted along shore by waves and currents.  There are some young dunes in the area, and blowout activity is common.

Integrity:  Most of the area has been developed for recreation, residential or military use so that very little can be considered to be in a natural state.

Use:  Education, observation
