Torrey Pines Kelp Bed

MAP     Satellite

A few meters off the bluffs at the Torrey Pines State Reserve is this rather small kelp bed which consists of a number of separated patches.  Rocky outcrops furnish the substrate for these patches of the giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera.  The surf grass, Phyllospadix scouleri, is also found here.

Integrity:  Their small size, relative remoteness, and proximity to the Reserve tend to discourage divers and commercial and recreational fishermen; consequently the patches are relatively undisturbed.

Use:  Research, education
