Coon Creek Area
Map SatelliteSeveral plant communities are found in this area which lies to the south of Montana de Oro State Park (see Montana De Oro State Park and Vicinity). They include chaparral, coastal sage scrub, Bishop pine forest and some riparian woodland.
In the chaparral the rare Arctostaphylos pechoensis is found. The Bishop pine, Pinus muricata, forest is quite dense along some of the southern slopes. The dominant in the riparian is the black cottonwood, Populus trichocarpa.
Animals are numerous and abundant and include several unusual populations, one of which is a melanistic phase of a garter snake, Thamnophis sp.
Integrity: Portions of the area have been burned and others grazed but, in general, the vegetation is relatively undisturbed.
Use: Private.
