Freeborn Mountain And Hubbard Hill Region

Map     Satellite

These hills, forming a part of the northwesterly slopes of the Carrizo Plain, support an excellent example of a semi-desert chaparral community. California juniper, Juniperus californica, is a conspicuous element of the chaparral in this region. Other species include Arctostaphylos sp., Ceanothus sp., and Eriogonum fasciculatum. A few coast live oaks, Quercus agrifolia, are found here.

Animals are typical of the central inner Coast Range.

Geologically, much of the area is underlain by lower and mid-Miocene marine sedimentaries, though there are some Miocene volcanics.

Integrity: There is a dirt trail through the area. The vegetation is virtually undisturbed and no fires have occurred in the area for a number of decades.

Use: Research, educational, observational, on public portions; some private.
