Lion And Pecho Rocks Lion Rock lies approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) northwest of Diablo Canyon; Pecho Rocks, about 3 kilometers (2 miles) southeast. Both are seabird breeding colonies, primarily for cormorants. Among the numerous algae found in the vicinity is the sea palm, Postelsia palmaeformis, which reaches its southernmost limits here. These offshore rocks are composed of a Pleistocene marine sedimentary material and are continuous with onshore reefs. Volcanic ash deposits form rock stacks and sea stacks. A rare rock type, analcite diabase or augite teschenite, is found here and at several other localities in the County. Integrity: Virtually undisturbed. Due to the siting of the nuclear power plant in Diablo Valley, intensive studies are being made of the entire area. Use: Private Ref: Frame, Michael A. 1972.
