Point San Luis Pillow Basalts

MAP     Satellite

Pillow basalts are well exposed in the steep sea cliffs found along the coast here. These basalts were formed by extrusion of magma from volcanoes or fractures in the ocean floor. As the magma extruded it was rapidly cooled by the sea water, solidifying and forming round masses resembling pillows. Here the pillows are exposed in natural outcrops, with individual pillows exposed, allowing the study of their structure and relationships.

Integrity: Undisturbed, though fill may take place.

Use: Research, educational, observational. Portion is private.
