Huddart County Park
Map SatelliteHuddart Park lies on the northeasterly-facing slope of Kings Mountain. Vegetation consists primarily of a mixed evergreen forest, with coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, madrone, Arbutus menziesii. California bay, Umbellularia californica, and tan-oak, Lithocarpus densiflorus, the canopy. The understory includes toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia, Ceanothus sp. and Toxicodendron diversilobum. Along the gullies and intermittent streams are redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens; they extend up the lower slopes into the evergreen forest.
There are a few stands of chaparral, with chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, Arctostaphylos sp., chaparral pea, Pickeringia montana, and yerba santa, Eriodictyon californicum, the main components.
In the lower part of the park an oak woodland occurs, with valley and black oaks, Quercus lobata and Quercus kelloggii.
Numerous animals typical of the region are present.
The San Andreas Fault Zone crosses the lower portion of the park.
Integrity: Most of the redwood and firs were logged about 100 years ago. There are trails and various recreational facilities, and portions of the park have been heavily impacted by use.
Use: Educational, observational, present.
