San Gregorio Marsh and Estuary
Map SatelliteA small freshwater marsh, several acres extent, occurs near the mouth of San Gregorio Creek. Scirpus sp., Typha sp., and Carex sp. are present.
The marsh supports a varied fauna and during the migratory season is a frequently used resting and feeding area for waterfowl.
In the estuary, where the creek flows into the sea, during low tides the formation of various sedimentary structures is visible, including ripple marks, crossbeds, and graded bedding.
Integrity: The marsh lies within the San Gregorio State Beach, and heavy use of the beach and inland facilities will have an adverse impact on the marsh. There is heavy traffic on the beach and across the estuary. Inland and within the park area there is an Indian midden.
Use: Observation, research, educational.
