Cañada Del Cojo Coastal Terrace

Map     Satellite

On this low, undulating marine terrace there is a relatively pristine representative example of the coastal sage scrub community.  Approximately two-thirds of the terrace is scrub, with much of the remainder grasslands, though there is some coastal strand vegetation by the bluffs and some riparian woodland along the streams which course along the eastern and western boundaries of the area.

With the drainage pattern well developed there is a good display of the scrub community vegetation including Artemisia californica, Baccharis pilularis, Eriogonom parvifolium, Eriogonum fasciculatum, Salvia mellifera, Salvia leucophylla, Salvia apiana, Rhus integrifolia, and Lupinus arboreus.

Integrity:  Several dirt roads traverse the area and the main coastal rail line skirts the bluff. Cattle grazing has made some inroads into the scrub on the seaward side.  A nuclear reactor is planned for the site.
