Cañada Del Corral
Map SatelliteBetween the lowland coastal sage scrub and the foothill woodland on the crest of the Santa Ynez Range lies this representative stand of coastal chaparral. As the area was last burned in 1955 the chaparral is mature to senescent.
Important species here include chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia, mountain mahogany, Cercocarpus betuloides, Yucca whipplei, holly-leaved cherry, Prunus ilicifolia, Ceanothus spp., Rhus spp. and Arctostaphylos spp.
In the vicinity of the spring in Caņada Del Corral is one of the southernmost occurrences of the currant Ribes sanguineum var. glutinosum. Just to the west in Las Flores Canyon the uncommon fern Cheilanthes cooperae occurs on the west slope.
Red, buff and yellow sandstone beds form conspicuous outcrops, contrasting sharply with the heavy chaparral cover. The entire area is set apart by its relief from the more moderate slopes at its foot.
Integrity: There is a jeep trail in the area. Use: Private
