Coal Oil Point Vicinity

MAP     Satellite

Included in this area are four discrete units, immediately adjacent to the Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve.

The first is the inner portion of the lagoon and slough which is used by a variety of waterfowl and shorebirds for both feeding and resting.  Vegetation includes cattails, Typha sp., as well as some exotics.

The dune area abutting to the northwest is also included.  Vegetation is similar to that in the Reserve.

On the bluff top to the east is a highly disturbed vernal pool.  The rare plant Scrophularia atrata has been collected in this area.

Seaward, the ocean portion extends beyond the present Reserve boundaries some 275 meters (900 feet) offshore.  Giant kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, is present.

Offshore there are several natural oil seeps.

Integrity:  Much of the land and lagoon area is disturbed, heavily in the vernal pool locale.

Use:  Research, educational, observational, in public portions.  Some private.
