Painted Cave

MAP     Satellite

Painted Cave is an extensive sea grotto on the rugged north shore of Santa Cruz Island near its west end.  The cave, which extends into the near vertical sea cliff more than 60 meters (200 feet), was formed by erosion along a fracture in the volcanic andesite.  It is more than 18 meters (60 feet) high in places, and the water depth is some 10 meters (30 feet).  Minerals deposited by water seepage on the mottled volcanic interior give the grotto its "painted" appearance.

California sea lions, Zalophus californianus, frequent the cave.
