Arroyo Hondo
Map SatelliteThe Arroyo Hondo supports a permanent stream which drains into Calaveras Reservoir. The upper canyon slopes are covered by an oak woodland, with coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia, and black oak, Quercus kelloggii, the prime components. This woodland grades into a savannah and grassland. Some chaparral is found, with Ceanothus sp., coffeeberry, Rhamnus californica, and Arctostaphylos sp. present.
By the stream a riparian community occurs, including willow, Salix sp., and some sycamore, Platanus racemosa.
There is a relative abundance of animal life typical of the region. Of interest are the ouzels, Cinclus mexicanus, and wood ducks, Aix sponsa, both of which breed here.
In the permanent stream a native population of rainbow trout, Salmo gairdnerii, is present, as well as populations of the California roach, Hesperoleucus symmetricus, prickly sculpin, Cottus asper, and Sacramento sucker, Catostomus occidentalis.
