In the rather steep-sided canyon of the North Fork of Battle Creek is the northernmost population of the California nutmeg, Torreya californica.

Other vegetation includes a riparian community which grades into a mixed evergreen forest with Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, dominant along with canyon oak, Quercus chrysolepis. In the riparian community the dominants are big-leaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, Oregon ash, Fraxinus latifolia, white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, and, in the under-story, spice-bush, Calycanthus occidentalis.

Animal life is typical of the region. In the past, wolverines, Gulo luscus, have been sighted here.

Integrity: The area is unlogged.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
