Shingletown Ridge Natural Area

Map     Satellite

This area, a Quaternary volcanic tableland with moderate slopes, contains some good examples of old-growth MacNab cypress, Cupressus macnabiana, which here are about 80 kilometers (50 miles) south of their most northerly distribution in the State.

There is also a small area of savannah woodland, with blue oak, Quercus douglasii, and gray pine, Pinus sabiniana. Additionally, there is some undisturbed chaparral in the area which here includes whiteleaf manzanita, Arctostaphylos viscida, California juniper, Juniperus californica, and Brewers oak, Quercus garryana var. breweri.

Integrity: Virtually undisturbed, though a power line cuts across a corner of the area. The land has been segregated from appropriation under agricultural and mining laws.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
