Map     Satellite

Cedar Lake is the headwater of the south fork of the Sacramento River. The area surrounding it is of botanical and zoological interest.

The lake is bordered by a conifer forest, with white fir, Abies concolor, and ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, the dominants.

Seven genera of Ericaceous plants have been noted in the area, as well as such species as Gentiana newberryi, Darlingtonia californica, Drosera rotundifolia, Epilobium rigidum, and Pedicularis contorta.

Animal life is abundant and varied. Among the mammals recorded in the area are mountain lion, Felis concolor, marten, Martes americana, fisher, Martes pennanti. The wolverine, Gulo luscus, probably occurs here.

Geologically, the basin lies in the serpentine belt of the eastern Klamath Mountains.

Integrity: There is a road in the area, but the vegetation is relatively undisturbed.

Use: Research, educational, observational, on public portion. Some private.
