Goosenest Baker Cypress Stand
Map SatelliteThis stand, separated by some 88 kilometers (55 miles) from the Baker Cypress Research Natural Area, includes the largest known Baker cypress, Cupressus bakeri. The tree is 27 meters (88 feet) tall and is 3.07 meters (10 feet, 1 inch) in circumference. A 1-meter (3-foot, 3-inch) diameter at breast-height tree was cut and was found to be over 200 years old.
The larger trees are found in a stand of mixed conifers, with ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, and white fir, Abies concolor. Others are found growing in an Arctostaphylos thicket.
The northernmost known stand of the cypress is some 64 kilometers (40 miles) north in Oregon.
Integrity: The grove is being shaded out by natural pine reproduction and will require reduction or elimination of the pines to protect it.
Use: Research, educational, observational. The larger trees are on the Forest Service land. Remainder, private.
