Joe Creek
Map SatelliteThis area, which abuts Cook and Green Pass on the west, embraces the upper drainage of Joe Creek.
Vegetation is primarily a conifer forest, with red fir, Abies magnifica, and mountain hemlock, Tsuga mertensiana, the dominants. There is a stand of noble fir, Abies procera, and Pacific silver fir, Abies amabilis, approximately 3.5 kilometers (2 miles) long on the steep north-facing slopes. Abies amabilis is the dominant reproducing species. This is the largest as well as one of the three known stands in California of this species which ranges north to Alaska.
Integrity: There are several dirt roads and a mine in the area; however, the silver fir stand is virtually undisturbed.
Use: Research, educational, observational.
