Putah Creek Wildlife Area
Map SatellitePutah Creek Wildlife Area lies on the south side of the creek, approximately 240 meters (800 feet) downstream from the Monticello Dam, and includes the lower portion of Cold Creak Canyon. It abuts the Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve.
The greater part of the area is steep hillside, with chaparral the main cover. Chamise, Adenostoma fasciculatum, and buck brush, Ceanothus cuneatus, are the main components of the chaparral. Buckeye, Aesculus californica, interior live oak, Quercus wislizenii, blue oak, Quercus douglasii, Arctostaphylos sp., and toyon, Heteromeles arbutifolia, are found in the open woodland on the hills.
Along the creek are white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, redbud, Cercis occidentalis, and willows, Salix sp.
Animal life is abundant and includes gray fox, Urocyon cinereoargenteus, coyote, Canis latrans, beaver, Castor canadensis, and California quail, Lophortyx californicus.
Integrity: There is a path along the creekside. The vegetation is virtually undisturbed.
Use: Research, educational, light recreational.
