Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve
Map SatelliteArmstrong Redwoods State Reserve includes a rather extensive typical stand of virgin redwoods, Sequoia sempervirens. One of the redwoods is 4.2 meters (13.8 feet) in diameter and stands 94 meters (310 feet) tall and is estimated to be some 1,200 to 1,500 years old.
Other species include tan-oak, Lithocarpus densiflora, big-leaf maple, Acer macrophyllum, California bay, Umbellularia californica, redwood sorrel, Oxalis oregana, Trillium ovatum, and sword fern, Polystichum munitum.
There are relatively abundant populations of pileated woodpeckers, Dryocopus pileatus, and pygmy owls, Glaucidium gnoma. Vaux's swift, Chaetura vauxi, breeds here.
Integrity: There are trails, campsites and some roads. In some areas heavy use is damaging the redwoods.
Use: Research, educational, observational, light recreation.
