Goat Rock

Map     Satellite

Lying approximately 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) south of the mouth of the Russian River, Goat Rock supports an unusually dense and diverse coastal bluff community. Among the numerous species found here are Polygonum paronychia, Fragaria chiloensis, Armeria maritima, Erigeron glaucus, Ambrosia chamissonis, Erysimum franciscanum and Lupinus arboreus.

The animal population is typical.

Integrity: This rock, a part of the Sonoma Coast Beach State Park, until recently was virtually pristine, never having been grazed and subject to only an occasional hiker. However, the construction of a nearby parking lot, thus increasing accessibility, has resulted in some damage to the vegetation.

Use: Research, educational, observational.
