Los Guilicos Ecological Reserve

Map     Satellite

This reserve is located on the lower slopes of Mount Hood in Sonoma Valley. Most of the area is covered by a mixed evergreen forest with Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, the dominant tree mixed with black oak, Quercus kelloggii, and madrone, Arbutus menziesii. Arctostaphylos manzanita is prominent in the understory.

There is a small oak woodland in the higher elevation consisting primarily of white oak, Quercus garryana, with some coast live oak, Quercus agrifolia. The understory is grassland and, during the spring, supports a fine display of wildflowers.

A portion of the area, on the valley floor, was farmed but now is in a successional stage to a Douglas fir forest.

Animals are typical of the area.

There are important archaeological finds on the reserve.

Integrity: The area has been farmed and grazed, but much of the vegetation on the slopes is virtually undisturbed.

Use: Research, educational.
