Salmon Beach Strand

Map     Satellite

Approximately 3.5 kilometers (2.2 miles) long, this is the longest sand beach in the County and is exposed to the full force of the incoming northwest surf.

Among the few plants that are found on the strand is sea rocket, Cakile maritima, a European species which was introduced into the Bay Area in the mid-1930's and is now found from Monterey to Mendocino counties as well as on some of the Channel Islands in Southern California.

A number of shorebirds can be observed feeding here, the most common, the sanderling, Crocethia alba. It is possible that the snowy plover, Charadrius alexandrinus, may breed here.

Integrity: The beach is well used by people and dogs and has camping and other facilities. There is less disturbance at the southern end near Mussel Point.

Use: Present
