W. J. Kerr Park Wilderness Area
Map SatelliteOn the Stanislaus River approximately 3 kilometers (1.4 miles) east of Oakdale, this area supports a good riparian growth as well as some freshwater marsh. Cottonwood, Populus fremontii, and willows, Salix spp., are the dominants in the overstory of the riparian association, though there are some valley oak, Quercus lobata. Wild grape, Vitis californica, is conspicuous in the understory.
There is a small lake fringed with a freshwater marsh where cattails, Typha spp., tules, Scirpus spp., and Carex sp. occur. A heavy concentration of marsh-oriented birds is found here.
Integrity: Tailings occupy a portion of the area and there are trails.
Use: Research, educational, observational, present.
