Burroughs Pinery
Map SatelliteBurroughs Pinery is an almost pure stand of ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, forming a park-like area on a flattish ridgetop or tableland. Essentially, it is an island of pine in the chaparral that surrounds it on the ridge slopes.
The chaparral here includes greenleaf manzanita, Arctostaphylos patula, whiteleaf manzanita, Arctostaphylos viscida, buck brush, Ceanothus cuneatus, and scrub oak, Quercus berberidifolia. On the edge of the pinery there is a relatively narrow band where the forest and the chaparral intermix.
The understory in the pinery is composed primarily of grasses.
Integrity: The area is virtually pristine.
Use: Research, educational, observational.
