Cub Creek Research Natural Area
Map SatelliteAll of the Cub Creek watershed is included in this area. Vegetation consists primarily of a mixed conifer forest with ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa, Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii, sugar pine, Pinus lambertiana, and incense cedar, Calocedrus decurrens. Higher, this grades into a white fir forest with Abies concolor and, in the highest portions, there is a red fir forest where Abies magnifica dominates.
On the drier slopes a mixed chaparral is present and includes Arctostaphylos patula, Arctostaphylos nevadensis, deer brush, Ceanothus integerrimus, chinquapin, Chrysolepis sempervirens, and huckleberry oak, Quercus vaccinifolia.
Near the creek there are dense stands of Douglas fir, white alder, Alnus rhombifolia, and mountain dogwood, Cornus nuttallii.
It is a rather rugged area with bare lava outcrops of Pliocene origin.
Integrity: The area is virtually pristine.
Use: Research, educational, observational.
