East Weaver Lake
Map SatelliteHere, in the Weaver Bally Mountains, the Brewer spruce, Picea breweriana, reaches its southern limit. Though not rare, the species has a relatively restricted distribution, ranging to the north along the higher ridges of the Klamath Mountains and elsewhere for some 225 kilometers (140 miles).
The dominant trees in the open forest here are mountain hemlock, Tsuga mertensiana, and red fir, Abies magnifica. The spruce is a minor component. There is also some montane chaparral, with greenleaf manzanita, Arctostaphylos patula, and huckleberry oak, Quercus vaccinifolia, the major components. The rare Veronica copelandii is found here.
There is evidence of Pleistocene glaciation in the area, and East Weaver Lake is a cirque lake.
Integrity: Aside from the trails in the area, it is relatively undisturbed.
Use: Educational, research, observational, light recreation.
