Foxtail Basin - East Sirretta Pass

Map     Satellite

In this area there is a highly localized subalpine forest. It is the only known area where the foxtail pine, Pinus balfouriana, Jeffrey pine, Pinus jeffreyi, limber pine, Pinus flexilis, Western white pine, Pinus monticola, and lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta ssp. murrayana, are found growing together. It is the southernmost and perhaps the finest stand of the foxtail pine, the nearest population being some 40 kilometers (25 miles) to the north.

Eriogonum polypodum reaches the southern limit of its distribution in this area, as do Labrador tea, Ledum glandulosum, and several Carex spp.
