Garfield Natural Area
Map SatelliteSeveral of the important Sierra Nevada plant communities are protected in this Natural Area. It includes a representative ponderosa and sugar pine forest, Pinus ponderosa and Pinus lambertiana, a canyon live oak forest, Quercus chrysolepis, and several sequoia (big tree), Sequoiadendron giganteum, groves, including the Homers Nose, South Fork and Garfield Groves. The latter is among the largest virgin sequoia groves extant.
Animal life in the area is typical of the southern Sierra. Wolverines, Gulo luscus, may be present.
There are numerous caves and caverns in the area.
Integrity: Virtually undisturbed.
Use: Research, education.
