Whitney Creek Natural Area
Map SatelliteWhitney Creek Natural Area is a small area on the western slope of Mount Whitney. In this subalpine area is a stand of limber pine, Pinus flexilis. Other species associated with it here are white-bark pine, Pinus albicaulis, and mountain hemlock, Tsuga mertensiana.
Two rare plants, Castilleja lemmonii and Juncus hemiendytus var. abiectus, occur in the area, as does the uncommon Triglochin palustris.
Animal life is sparse and typical of the upper-elevation Sierra.
Integrity: The area is virtually undisturbed.
Use: Research, educational.
