McGrath State Beach

MAP     Satellite

Within this well-used State Beach are several features of interest.  There is McGrath Lake, a freshwater lake that was probably once a small lagoon, which is frequented by a number of shore and water birds during the migratory season. Additionally, there is a freshwater marsh adjacent to the lake, with typical marsh vegetation.

The area also includes examples of the sand dunes that once covered the coast between Point Mugu and the mouth of the Santa Clara River and supported a well-developed coastal-strand floral community. Three different dune zones are present:  foredunes, a middle zone with some erosional remnants and some newly formed dunes, and an inner zone of irregular, hummocky hills.

Integrity: As the area is used for recreation, the vegetation on the dunes has been severely disturbed and some of the dunes have been stabilized by artificial means.

Use:  Educational, observational, present.
