Mugu Submarine Canyon

MAP     Satellite

Mugu Submarine Canyon lies to the west of Point Mugu.  The canyon is over 15 kilometers (9 miles) long and reaches a depth of 730 meters (2,400 feet) on the gentle slopes of the Santa Monica Basin. The head extends to within several hundred meters of the shore and differs from almost all of the other submarine canyons on the coast in that it has a meandering course at its head.

The upper, inshore part of the canyon comes closest to representing an entrenched meandering stream canyon than any other known submarine canyon.
